A sunny day is helping to melt the record snowfall across Carroll County and Maryland, but the job of clearing the snow will take several days.

A tour of several neighborhoods around the Sykesville-Eldersburg area this morning reveals varying road conditions. Routes 32 and 26 are in fair condition, with bare pavement on much of the surfaces. But secondary and side streets are still mostly snow covered, and in some instances, have yet to be plowed.

We would encourage residents to remain home this afternoon to let the plow crews do their thing, and to keep the roads open for emergency responders. It looks tempting to go out and test the roads, but your patience and cooperation is appreciated.

We would also recommend that while you area clearing your walks and driveways to take frequent breaks and not over-exert yourself. There have already been several snow shoveling-related fatalities reported in Maryland.

As you shovel, make sure your vents are clear from snow and ice to prevent carbon monoxide issues. Sykesville fire units have responded to two such incidents so far today.

Finally, a big THANK YOU to the residents of the area who have pitched in to help us out on emergency responses, especially as we shovel our way into residences on calls. It's great to see the community come together and help neighbors in need.
