When I think back to this winter, it was one of the most challenging winters I've ever had to endure in my 24 yrs here in Maryland. However, I knew Sykesville/Freedom FD, wouldn't let us down. When I saw the smoke and then the news that evening I'm thinking to myself "what how can this possibly be happening." Words can't describe the sadness I felt that Day. But as a member of a small yet beautiful Maryland community I knew yall would pull through and indeed you did. I wanted to thank you'll for putting your lives on the line for us everyday and believe me your sacrifices will not soon be forgotten. Everyone here in Sykesville loves each and every one of you and we have a tremendous amount of respect for you. I hope to get to the station soon and thank each and every one of you personally for what you've done for our community and for what you'll continue to do.

What a sad thing to hear about this week. My heart goes out to you all. I had the pleasure of spending several times filling in at your station when it was new. We would bring Air Unit 14 and fill your cascade system and fill in for your banquet. Thankfully no one was injured or worse yet removed from our presence. I know you will rebuild your station and will continue to serve the community. I still have many fond memories of my eleven years with Winfield and our sister station. May the good Lord be with you all in your rebuilding of a great station.

After walking through the firehouse tonight to assess the damage of the telecommunications I was left speechless. I have been a member here for nearly 10 years now and can still remember the excitement of the new construction, which has now been lost. The damage is truly catastrophic, but there is no doubt in my mind that company 12 will endure and rebuild.

I was amazed to see the number of people that showed up to volunteer tonight – there must have been 25 or 30 different people volunteering to help out with everything from electrical work and moping the floors to chipping away ice and helping to set up the temporary living quarters. Firefighters, EMT’S, and Rescue Personnel are the people that the community turns to when the have an emergency and now it is the community’s turn to give back. I hope to see the residents of Sykesville/Eldersburg and the surrounding recognize that we are in a time of need and offer their support!

I'm so sorry for the loss of the building. Even though I now live in Pa, I'm originally from Sykesville. Thanks to Sykesville and Liberty Rd FD, I'm where I'm at today. I remember staying at my Grandma's during the summer and walking across the street to the firehouse and bugging the guys that were usually hanging out. The carnivals were always great and I haven't been down in years. I still have family in the area. My Uncle is one your board members. You will rebuild. You will be better and badder then before. I'm glad no one was hurt and the apparatus is ok. A building can be replaced but a person can not, you will always have the memories. Sykesville Fire Department will make it through this.

I lived in Sykesville for two years and got to meet some of the members there as they were my neighbors. I also went to alot of functions at the fire house. Being a fellow firefighter my thoughts are with you as you rebuild. I know you will continue to provide the services you always have. God Bless You All.

I grew up in Carroll County and on a few occasions received aid from the Sykesville Fire Dept. When I broke my leg and when the carbon mono-oxide detectors went off at my house they were there for my family and I. I also received my CPR certification there and attended many of the carnivals. Although my family and I have all disbursed to areas outside the Carroll County area we have fond memories of the fire department and are deeply saddened by the news of the damage. Our hearts and prayers go out to the men and women of the Fire Department and hope for a swift recovery.

Comments:

We think of you often when recalling your great response to the addicent involving our grandson, Cole Kreger, on Mother's Day a few years ago. His parents are Kim and John Kreger in Eldersburg. After the helicopter departed for Johns Hopkins with Cole and Kim, some of your firefighters returned with a bouquet of flowers for Kim. We have a good idea of the type of people you are - you'll bounce right back and reconstruct your social hall to be the best one ever. And you'll take excellent care of your community at the same time. We will ask Kim and John to keep us posted on your rebuilding project and will stand ready to "chip in" when the time comes.
Best regards to each and every one of you,
Irmi and Harry Kreger
